She began as an electrical engineer, shifted to law, then became an educator, worked her way up to a full professor, then moved into upper administration as a dean, a director, a provost, a vice-president of academic affairs, and an interim president. She experienced the belt-tightening and resource restrictions that have challenged administrators throughout tertiary-level institutions.
